International Co-op Day 2016
International Cooperative Day 2016 falls on July 2nd. The event is an annual celebration of the co-operative movement and is observed on the first Saturday in July. This celebration has been going on since 1923 by the International Co-operative Alliance. In 1995 the United Nations’ International Day of Cooperatives joined in the celebrating jointly alongside International Cooperative Day.
Cooperatives around the world celebrate the day in various fashions and each year the organizing institutions agree on a theme for the celebrations. This year’s theme is Sustainable Development Goals. More info
What’s a Co-op?
A cooperative (“co-op”) or co-operative is an autonomous association of people who choose to cooperate for their mutual, social, economic, and cultural benefit. The cooperative movement has been fueled globally by ideas of economic democracy.
POCA, the People’s Organization of Community Acupuncture is the largest acupuncture organization in the U.S. and is also a co-operative. POCA members are acupuncturists, acupuncture clinics, patients, staff and supporting businesses. Together we’re the people of POCA!
