Your Winter Drink
Here is a simple, easy, AND delicious recipe for a homemade electrolyte drink that’s a big hit in my house during the winter months. Electrolytes are minerals in your body that have an electric charge. They’re found in your blood, urine, tissues, and other body fluids. Electrolytes are important because they help balance the amount of water in your body and your body’s acid/base (pH) level. Symptoms of an electrolyte imbalance can include twitching, weakness & fatigue, headache, nausea, blood pressure changes, muscle cramps, low energy, and simply not feeling well.
This recipe makes a GREAT post-workout/yoga class drink! It contains key nutrients to help replenish your body’s lost water and electrolytes after exercise. Being sick, having a fever, diarrhea or vomiting are all situations where you need to boost your electrolytes.
Instead of drinking a cold, store-bought Gatorade (Gatorade contains: water, high fructose corn syrup, citric acid, salt, modified food starch, mono-potassium sulfate, sodium citrate, emulsifiers, and natural flavorings), try this recipe instead!
DIY Winter Electrolyte Drink Recipe

1-3 tbsp fresh ginger juice
3 c. hot water
Juice of 1/2 to 1 fresh lemon
1/4 tsp sea salt
1 – 2 tbsp. honey or maple syrup
Directions
Stir all ingredients until dissolved. Drink before, during and after you work out or when you need a little something extra from your drink! If your energy is low and you’re running cold and achy, add more ginger!
Ginger has a lot of health benefits: it can improve circulation, and is great for colds and flu; it’s also deliciously warming from the inside out! You can make your own ginger juice! Just scrape off the skin from a fresh ginger root using a spoon then grate and squeeze the pulp. Here is a fabulous video that will show you how to make ginger juice. Or you can also use a garlic press!
Please experiment and have fun with this recipe. Some other ingredients to try include cayenne, coconut water, and lime juice.
